Bomb, 3000 lb GP, M118

Description

The figure shows the appearances and dimensions of the M118 bomb. The M118E1 differs from the M118 in that it has threaded lug wells (similar to the M117 series). These are general purpose high explosive bombs which may use proximity, mechanical, or electric nose and tail fuzes. Both fragmentation and blast effect are produced by these bombs. The bombs are painted olive drab and have yellow markings which include the type of explosive charge, the national stock number (NSN), the average weight, and the year loaded. The bomb body and conical fin assembly are steel. The MAU-91 fin assembly is aluminum.

M118 series bombs are only fitted with a conical fin assembly. All bombs may have an arming wire assembly, lanyard, or an electrical charging receptacle installed, depending on the fuzing employed. The charging well between the suspension lugs may be fitted with either an electrical charging receptacle with an arming safety switch installed or a lanyard, or closed by a plug to provide watertight integrity. The suspension lugs are 762mms (30.00 inches) apart. The conical fin assemblies for the bombs have access doors, secured by quick-release fasteners, to give access to the tail fuze cavity. The arming/drive assembly for a mechanical fuze extends through the side of the fin assembly. The nose fuze cavity may contain either a fuze, a proximity sensing element, or a nose plug (with or without fuze).

The bombs are painted olive drab and have yellow markings which include the type of explosive charge, the national stock number (NSN), the average weight, and the year loaded.
