These are percussion primed cartridges incorporating a fragmentation (frag) projectile with either a VMG or a VMG-M fuze. The VMG is a setback armed, impact fired, point detonating fuze. The VMG-M is a setback and centrifugally armed, impact or impact inertia fired, graze sensitive, point detonating, self-destroying fuze. The self-destroying feature is a setback initiated pyrotechnic delay powder train. The cartridge is fired against personnel and light material targets.
Depending on the model cartridge used, the upper body of the VMG-M fuze is chemically colored gold (VOG-17M cartridge) or blue (VOG-26 cartridge); the remainder of the VMG-M fuze and the VMG fuze is unfinished metal. The cartridge cases are chemically colored gold. The projectile body has a black phosphate finish with a copper rotating band. Nomenclature and manufacturing information are stenciled on the VMG-M fuze striker plate in black, on the projectile body in silver, and is stamped into the body of the VMG fuze.
