Description

The bomb BLU-17/B is a white phosphorus (WP) filled bursting type grenade designed to be dispensed from aircraft bomb dispensers SUU-14/A, SUU-14A/A, SUU-7B/A, and SUU-7C/A.

Functioning

The smoke bomb BLU-17/B is a small, incendiary smoke (WP) bomb that detonates above the ground. Upon detonation, the bomb scatters particles of steel and dense white phosphorus smoke over a 35 yard radius area. When the bomb is ejected from the dispenser, air pressure lifts off the spring tab which releases the lever to the bomb body. As the lever moves outward, it releases pressure on the spring-actuated striker which rotates about a hinge pin and strikes the primer. The primer ignites the delay charge which, after a delay of 4 to 5 seconds, explodes the burster.
