This is a spin extended fin stabilized, surface to surface, high explosive, antitank rocket. The rocket uses a V659 or VP-18DU base detonating (BD) fuze with a point initiating (PI) element. The fuze is an acceleration armed type consisting of a piezoelectric crystal PI (nose) element, and an integral setback action BD element. The BD element has a pyrotechnic self destruct time delay feature.
The rocket and a disposable launcher come preassembled as a complete fully operational assault weapon unit. When the launcher telescopic firing tube is extended, and the front and rear gun sights are deployed, the trigger/firing mechanism is armed to fire the rocket. The launcher unit is designated RPG-18.
The rocket warhead and motor sections are painted olive drab with black stenciled designation markings. Inspection markings are painted black and red. The PI element is unpainted metal with stamped markings and, either a metal or a white translucent plastic protective cover. The adapter is chemically colored light green with four red tape covers over the spin ports; the nozzle and fins are also chemically colored light green. The protective cover (cap) of the fuze has a painted blue band across the top.
